The short dress – doable for the wedding or bumping it to reception only?

July 5, 2009

The vision of a floor length dress and a flowing train is one I always imagined as the “traditional dress”. I still will be wearing this type of dress. Somehow my apparel turns uber-conservative when I enter a church. I bring out the school teacher friendly length skirts and my cutest heels are kept in their boxes.

I love short dresses though. One thing I’ve got is long legs (for my body, no I am not otherwise shaped like a model). I’ll change into a shorter dress for part of my reception. Salsa requires short dresses!

Designers are now creating more options for the cocktail length/dance-friendly dress.
Amsale even has a Little White Dress Shop.

Net-a-Porter
and Nordstrom also have wedding sections with quite a few short dresses. Nordstrom has an awesome selection of longer dresses (all under $500! if I didn’t love lace so much, I would have gotten a dress here).

Here are some of my favorite options:
Theory Edwina cotton dress – $345
Notte by Marchesa – embroidered cocktail dress- $795BCBG Strapless Applique dress – $398
BCBG Laser cut sheath dress – $268
ABS by Allen Schwartz Puff sleeve one-shoulder dress – $240The cool thing about shorter dresses is that they’re usually cheaper and they are perfect for all the grooving we will all end up doing at the reception.

So what do you think about these short dresses? Doable the whole day or just something you’d switch into for the reception? Or whatever, I lovveeeee my dress I’m not taking it off!

You can do it the whole day, it just depends on how “formal” your event is. But I love the short dresses and they are fun! I especially love the second one you have pictured here. I’m wearing a long dress for the whole thing, mostly because I need to get my money out of it! And, I’ll only really be able to wear it once.

Hey, it’s your day, wear whatever you want and makes you feel good!!!! I’m loving that last one by ABS. So cute. Kelly is right – depends are the formality of your ceremony etc….but for the reception…I say anything goes!

OK, for myself, I LOVE the BCBG strapless, but I hate my legs and it’s a longer style. If you’ve got great gams, I’d go for laser cut sheath. It’s HOT!

i’m totally into the reception or afterparty shorter dress change. i like the formality of a floor length gown for the actual ceremony but i know i’m gonna wanna kick up my heels for the rest of the day! but regardless of what i’m thinking of doing, i think it’s totally ok for a girl to do short for the whole thing. it all depends on the girl!

I’m thinking of changing into a shorter dress too for part of the reception, I want to do a salsa dance as well. The Notte by Marchessa looks like the perfect dress to dance in! but I also like the chic look of the ABS. You have great taste!

Oh Marchessa you make me happy. Also the ABS dress is hot! I say go for it, the salsa demands!

P.S. New to your blog – love it!
