Photo Love (Inspiration}: Being true to yourself and staying comfortable

August 30, 2010
To be nobody but yourself in a world which is doing its best, night and day, to make you everybody else means to fight the hardest battle which any human being can fight; and never stop fighting.

There is such power in this quiet photo – it is the power of self-assurance and one being completely comfortable in her own skin.  Katharine wore pants like no one could in an age of stockings, girdles, and petticoats.  Once the RKO studio took away her pants to force her to wear a skirt, she walked around the movie lot in her underwear until her pants were returned.  Whew, don’t play games with this lady!

Sometimes without realizing it, we may be quietly directed towards dressing a certain way, working in a certain job, and living a certain lifestyle.  But is it a lifestyle that makes you happy?  I actually attended a personal coaching workshop this past week and one of my main takeaways is that I am going to make a career switch.  It’s scary to segue into somewhat unknown territory but I realized that I wouldn’t be completely comfortable in a function in my old role.   It is transforming to a manner of living from which I was just fine  and earning a paycheck to one which I can speak with passion about my job.  It might take some time, but I’ll get there.

Here’s to living life on your own terms while being completely fashionable and comfortable.

Have a lovely week!

I’m almost 40. I’ve been really thinking about my life a lot. There are certain things in my life I’m happy about, while there are others that have me right miserable.

Congratulations to you for taking this huge step. I often wonder if a career change is in the cards for me, or if I need to stick it out in my current profession until I have enough experience to know it’s not for me. You are an inspiration.

Awesome post! I’ve also come to the realization that my day job is not where I ultimately want to be, and I’m taking steps to change my situation. Updating my wardrobe to reflect my true personality and the way I feel about myself has actually really helped in this discovery.

Amen sista! Seriously though, I’m excited for you that you came away from that workshop with the confidence to do that. It can be a scary move but you do have to be true to yourself and find something that you love. Good luck!!!

what a rad shot!!! and i love how she was portrayed in the movie “the aviator”. what a powerhouse of a lady! just fab!

and kudos to you for making a change. i have been contemplating one myself. it is risky, but the status quo is kind of soul-crushing, so it is worth the risk!

I always find myself wanting to dress far more elaborately than my current situation. While I could easily show up to work each day in jeans and crocs, I choose wear skirts and dresses and heels. I hope someday I find a job that is more than just a paycheck and hopefully a place where my coworkers will feel similarly about clothing as self expression and not just a formality of society or protection from the elements.

I love Katherine Hepburn! She looks so self-assured and confident. That sounds like a big decision you made… best of luck! I’m not sure I’ve decided what the answer to the question — lifestyle as happiness — is, but I’m sure I’ll find out eventually.
