Worth it?/Decor Thoughts: Phillipe Starck Louis ghost chair

November 30, 2010

Sleek, styling, and versatile, the Phillipe Starck Louis XV ghost chairs are the epitome of modern vintage (they’re a modern polycarbonate spin on the original Louis XV chair.)

It even comes in different designs now!

We’re looking for a few seating options for the living and dining area and I’m kinda intrigued by these chairs.   They’re certainly chic and unique.  But they’re not cheap with a retail of $410 (though in furniture shopping, I realize there are few cheap yet quality options),  While it is extremely durable. it also looks like a very nice plastic (so could that really be chic?)

I found a few on Craigslist and may eventually go for it,  If that doesn’t work out (since we know sellers aren’t always reliable), I may just take the plunge via CSN.

So, what do you think, is this chair worth it?

They are cute, but not sure if they are comfortable.

They are very chic and modern. I love the styling and they are also a conversation piece. Depending on your budget they could be a great purchase!

They are cute, I would definitely go for a cheaper knockoff, though that’s just me! XX!

I like the look of these chairs (and that they’re easy to clean), but I worry I would tire of them soon.

Have always been a big fan of these!!

I think it’s an interesting chair! I don’t know if I’d pay that much for it but I’d certainly admire them if I went to your house!!

  • PartyPlannerGal November 30, 2010 at 14:49

I’ve seen those chairs a lot on wedding blogs – they seem great for keeping small spaces open and light, but $410 is a lot of money. I would test drive before you buy, just in case they’re not comfortable. They’re very pretty, though!

  • Lauren November 30, 2010 at 14:50

YES. absolutely do it. they’re fabulous, go with everything, and really comfortable. I’d love to get a few more 🙂

  • Jude November 30, 2010 at 14:59

I always loved the way they minimize visual clutter, but the price & the “pretty plastic” side of it also made me hesitate everytime! I really like the idea of getting it on the down cheap (relatively :)) if you can!

  • Krysten @ After 'I Do' November 30, 2010 at 16:16

They’re lovely but I don’t know that I’d pay that much.

  • tanvii.com November 30, 2010 at 17:38

They look quite interesting and artistic.

  • honey my heart November 30, 2010 at 17:42

love it, but can’t afford it 🙁

  • Fashion, Art and other fancies November 30, 2010 at 18:23

Reminds one of our pop culture.
They would be out of place in my house,
but I’m sure they would look good in yours;-)

The clear plastic chairs feel very trendy, but not really the classic kind of chair you are going to want in your dining room for the next 20 years. If you don’t mind replacing them when they become passé in a few years, then go for it. Cuz they are cool.

    Chic on the Cheap

absolutely – not only is it beautiful but also an investment piece!!

I love these chairs because they look soo cool! But its cold here in Canada so I think I’d want as much fur I can pile on to anywhere I can sit!

    =)

i am dying for one for my desk in my bedroom- the CSN is too pricey though 🙁 sometimes overstock.com has but i haven’t seen lately. craigslist is a good idea!

  • Katie November 30, 2010 at 21:55

A cheap version would probably be just as good!

  • Karina Cifuentes November 30, 2010 at 23:09

We had these chairs in my former office. When they shipped, I was amazed how much smaller they are in real life! And for the cost, I’m going to say not worth it. Although usually, I do like Phillipe Starck, just not this time around. Oh, well! Great blog, btw. 🙂

@Shari and @Katie – interestingly enough, I HAVE seen knockoff versions that fully disclose themselves as such and are at least half the price. They look the same but of course I wonder about the quality.

If you really love it, i’d say go for it! However, personally i would rather just one side chair as a statement piece. I would prefer to splurge another piece of furniture that was a bit more timeless. Furniture is where i tend to spend the big bucks. If i really want a piece i can’t readily afford, i’ll save for it:-) Quality is of utmost importance! XX

I’ve wanted a ghost chair too but won’t spend that much money on one, so I’ve been scouring eBay. They actually pop up every now and then for a great price! Try looking there or Craigslist! xoxo

Anything Phillipe Starck gets my vote…

But sometimes I do think of the price twice:)

  • Zabrinah December 1, 2010 at 08:18

Ooooh, I have never seen anything like this! I really love them.

However, I won’t be digging into my wallet anytime soon.

    🙂

I’ve always liked the look of these – I think they would work and maybe one at a desk or something would not be overkill…I’ve seen them in various colors around a dining table and it looked AMAZING (kelly bensimon)

These are cool, but from experience, only nice to look at.

  • Jessica December 1, 2010 at 12:49

Probably not worth the price … even if they are fantastic. (Besides, how comfortable could a plastic chair really be?!)

  • Savvy Gal December 1, 2010 at 17:31

interesting but not worth the price for me.

  • Josie ♥ Savoir Weddings ♥ December 2, 2010 at 21:14

Oh I love them. Wouldn’t pay full price for them but if you can get them cheaper then hell yeah!
