Photo Love {Inspiration}: Music and feelings

September 26, 2011
Music is what feelings sound like.
Author unknown
I was one of those kids that was forced to take piano lessons every week since I was about 5 or 6.  I remember not quite getting it at first.  I would mechanically play the notes on the page, but the music was just sound that emitted from the piano.  When I became older, I started to develop more of a feeling towards music.  I would connect with the passion, sadness, or fear in the pieces that I would play and understood how those notes would create moods.  While I haven’t touched the ivories in a while, I still appreciate music and the memories and feelings associated with certain songs.
When we listened to “Lucky” by Jason Mraz feat. Colbie Caillat the other day, I was reminded of the first time I heard that song.  It was right before we got married and I insisted that it go on our wedding playlist because it so sweetly captured the light, lucky feeling I had of being in love and getting married.  Music can so beautifully encapsulate the range of emotions that we go through in our lives.  I’m reminded to keep on adding to my playlist and cherish old songs and find new ones that sound out my feelings.
What kind of music captures your feelings now?
Have a lovely week!

I play the piano and the violin so I’m very drawn to music. What captures my feeling: Music with soul and depth. Music which goes beyond caressing the senses ( like most music these days).

I totally agree with you on that. Music can really bring you back to a certain feeling.
I never played the piano but I’ve always wanted to learn violin 😀

That’s so wonderful that you took piano. Looking back I really wish that I had. My nephews take it and they are so incredible. I could listen to them for hours 🙂

I have synaesthesia, so I’m drawn to music by colors I hear. Bizarre, I know.

Music is so powerful! I’ve been listening to motivational songs like Dream On and Don’t Stop Believing to help get me through the next couple intense weeks.

I adore music and the emotions that come from it. Just this morning I heard a clip of The Lion King from Broadway and it took me back to high school and I was filled with sweet memories of friends, traveling and fun. I associate nearly every experience to songs. It bums me out to think that this generation doesn’t really have mix tapes/cd’s. I feel like playlists get deleted or changed but a mix tape is forever!

    what a lovely post!

i am not a musician, but i am a big fan of music. it captures the thoughts and feelings and moods that we all have (and/or want to have!!), and it does it so well!

Even though I do have a baby grand in my place, I’ve not played in years. I thoroughly enjoyed it and insisted on taking lessons at 4 years old. Classical music always sparks memories of when I learned how to play the piano and the hours and hard work I sat there to perfect each piece and commit it to memory.

Every time I hear the love theme from St. Elmo’s Fire, it reminds me of the hubs and our special day!

I was always strangely envious of the kids who were forced to learn and instrument…. the kind of thing I wish I knew, but would never commit to learning myself!

It’s so true! I can’t remember just when music started being more than just mechanics for me, but I’ve always loved that feeling when you are truly caught up in the music and everything else disappears.
