Photo Love {Inspiration}: Custom of the Country via Vogue US September 2012

October 29, 2012

It is only in the country that we can get to know a person or a book.

– Cyril Connolly, The Unquiet Grave, 1945

When was the last time you were in the countryside?

I am a city girl through and through, but fondly recall my time spent in areas that weren’t concrete jungles.  One of my first experiences in the countryside was a trip to Lancaster, Pennsylvania when I was a child.  My mother wanted us to experience a culture (Amish) and lifestyle (cow milking was part of our stay) that were far different from our city based lives.  We got to help out on a farm, eat local treats like shoo fly pie, and spend more time each other.  This was of course also before the days of our ubiquitous smart phones and addictive email/social media checking.  But I enjoyed  the chance to spend more time with my family and appreciate nature.

We will be visiting my sister-in-law’s family next month and while they technically live in a city according to some definitions, it is in a quiet, green area of NY.  These days, the cell phone signals are even fine out there, but I will try to resist the urge and catch up with family and get to know each other a little more.  It is all about enjoying the pleasures of the country right?

Have a lovely week!

It’s so hard for me not to constantly check my phone, even on vacation! Definitely good to get away from it all, the mental break most of all 🙂

I am officially a phone addict and am making a conscious decision to step away from it for periods of time during the day. I am a city girl, too, but there is plenty of country not too far away. I adore trips to wine country and hope to go again this fall 🙂

beautiful imagery…I live in the countryside and although it slush, green and mountainous, we don’t have wonderful old buildings like this!

My parents live in the countryside, so I will be there soon enough, it’s always beautiful. I tend to lose myself and forget about mobiles and social everything! 🙂 I loved this editorial of course!/ Madison

Ok the Lancaster experience looks great even though with the Amish 🙂
When I was little my mother used to send me and my brother to her aunt living in the countryside, she had horses where I learned to ride and also cows. And no one dressed like in the Vogue images 😉 ahaha

    have a stylish week darling

Haha, it is an experience meeting with the Amish!
Yes, people in the country side don’t dress like this, but I guess it is a “Vogue” countryside! Have a lovely week too dear!

I absolutely love escaping to the country. We did it a few weekends ago. First time in a long time. Were hoping to squeeze a trip in yesterday but Sandy had other plans for us 🙂

    Happy Monday! xoxo

Yes, I could picture myself there if I had access to a Vogue wardrobe 😉
Joking aside, it is always nice to get away with family.

Camping, visiting th farm, petting zoos were of limits when I was a kid…my mom had horrible fear of germs!! Now….English countryside sure does sound very refined!!

  • Akaleistar October 29, 2012 at 19:37

Beautiful photos! I think I need a trip to the country, too.

  • Oh to Be a Muse October 29, 2012 at 21:02

Yes, sometimes you just have to unplug. My hubby spent a day with an Amish family once, and I think he ate dinner with them. Don’t think he had to milk the cow himself though.
