Hair DIY: How to create a side french braid and bun

October 29, 2013

This is my first hair DIY on the site and for good reason – I am lazy about styling my hair!

I did get a new set of curlers recently though so I’m at least attempting to try a few new styles now!  I also wanted to share this hairstyle because it is pretty easy and one of my go to styles when I travel or when I just want to tame my sometimes unruly hair.  It can also easily be converted into an elegant bun as well.

1. Part hair to desired side.

2. Take three equal strands of hair from the side where the part starts to create a braid.  Braid once.

3. Keep braided portion intact and combine each strand with an additional piece on the new side along the direction of your side braid (i.e. strand to the left combines with a new sectioned strand on the left); these two strands combine to create the next part of your braid on each side.

4. Continue repeating step 3 to finish off your braid.  You will find there are no more sections of hair along the bottom of your head.  Braid normally and combine pieces from the top to finish using all the hair.

5. Style any front bangs as appropriate and complete your braid.

6. If you want to create a bun, simply twist the braid around a desired focal point and pin into place.

Wow you did such a good job with this. Not sure if I could do this on my own as I have zero patience for this kind of thing I ak all thumbs but someone else could do it for me. Though just had a really bad haircut or specifically poorly done bangs so will be while.

*mouth drops* Your hair is absolutely GORGEOUS! So thick and pretty! I love this style on you. HOW FABULOUS is that dress! I love the top straps and floral pattern. You’re so beautiful.

Kim, you are too kind! My hair isn’t really thick at all but I guess it braids well.
The dress is Lanvin for H&M – it is a little over the top, but I love it and wore it to a wedding last month!

Gorgeous! As easy as you made it look though I have a feeling it would take me much longer haha.

that looks so simple and elegant! I too am pretty lazy with my hair, I wish I would invest more time into styling it, but I just don’t make it a priority. I like to sleep more.

Braided hair is very popular in Jamaica and most females know how to braid. It’s a style that I love to so effortlessly sexy. Love your tutorial and the way yours look. Very chic.

omg this is so simple and gorgeous ! the bun is so elegant ! but idontknow if i can french braid my own hair
around the back like that ! seems hard !

    • Chic 'n Cheap Living November 18, 2013 at 19:30

Thank you for the sweet comment Rei! It took a few tries, but I promise that it actually isn’t that hard to french braid your own hair. I don’t even use a mirror, but feel my way through and it’s fine!

  • Lia November 18, 2013 at 11:28

I really like this! Especially cute when it’s as a bun!

    • Chic 'n Cheap Living November 18, 2013 at 22:53

Thanks Lia! It is super easy to make the side French braid into a bun. I hope you get to try it some time too!
