“What is a rebel? A man who says no.”

US Harper’s Bazaar November 2013

Madonna is definitely a rebel.

She went from sweetly singing “Holiday” to redefining music videos with “Vogue” and brazenly belting out cheeky lyrics in “Like a Virgin”.  The “queen of pop” wasn’t content singing pop tunes and didn’t confine herself to one style – in music, fashion or life (how different are Warren Beatty and Sean Penn?)

While I’m nowhere near as edgy as Madonna, I do love how she has continued to push the envelope and evolve over the years.   She had the courage to say “No” to traditional definitions.  I feel like many of us get corralled onto certain paths and it can be hard to get off the track.  I went to the good schools, had the typical expected jobs, but wasn’t fulfilled.  I’ve really learned to say no and search for another path that really interests me.  I’ve taken that first step lately and at a smaller place, but doing something I find much more significant.  I’m glad I said “No” too and hope this path will continue to be interesting and motivating.

When have you said “No” and taken another path?

Have a great week lovelies!

She’s still cool, but I admit that I loved her more from her older albums than to how she is now. But, she’s still cool. I say no a lot actually, haha. I think we live in a world that wants to put everyone in a box and label them, but I feel you have to say no and not let yourself be defined. When you do that, you open a whole new world of possibilities. I try to do that in everything I do…even with my blog. I don’t want to be like others, I just want to be myself, whatever they might be at any moment :)) Have a gorgeous week doll xx

Although I am not a Madonna fan I can see how her edginess and willingness not to conform has pushed her to success. She looks so good for her age. Hope you have a productive week ahead sweetheart!

Wow it’s so easy to forget how amazing Madonna is when she’s out of the spotlight. I agree, she has gotten more interesting with age and her staying power is amazing although I still love her early music the best. I love what you touch on about not being confined to a way of being, it seems to be part of the human condition–to see if we can just be who we are.

I thought this photoshoot of her was so cool! Just when you think Madonna is done, she takes it to another level. She’s always pushing the envelope. She does it well. I’ve always been a fan. She’s not a great singer, but her background music, dancing and costumes have always been a winner in my book. I like songs on all of her albums. Great post. Thank you so much for your kind words today on my post. I really appreciate them. ((hug))

Kim, I’m totally with you. Who would think someone at her age would continue to evolve after changing so much already! She is definitely more of a package – great performer and dancer. We can see where today’s pop stars got their inspiration!

Ya know she’s changed a lot over the years but I still love her…even when she makes ignorant comments but she’s a total bad a**! Her eyes are just stunning in these pics!

Johanna, I totally agree. She’s a little out there, but I still love her look, attitude, and performances!

Madison – age is definitely a beautiful thing and Madonna still looks great. I hope I can still rock it as the years go by!

Well, I did say no to college and I am on that path now… we shall see where it leads.

If saying ‘NO” qualifies as a rebel then I’ve been a rebel all my life.. I think it all sums up into doing what YOU love and what makes YOU happy and not what others expect you to do just because it is the “normal’ path in life.
All my life I lived in a city where everyone knows each other, everyone goes to the same school, country clubs, social groups, restaurants, gyms, etc…. a stuck-up society group like the ones you see in movies, when moms force you to wear a stupid gown for the stupid cotillion..oh yes..that exists in real life… and all girls are expected to go to school, get married, have babies, become housewives and start that circle all over again….I knew at the age of 9 that such life wasn’t for me…and I made it clear to my mom ever since. Last year I finally became fed up with all that nonsense and booked a flight, quit everything, packed my bags and left…I came to live to an awesome paradise in the Caribbean…I’ve never been happier.
Do what you love, say NO when you feel like it, say YES when you want to… don’t follow the flock, don’t limit yourself to the standard procedures… LIVE! it’s your life…you can do what you want with it… 🙂
..awesome quote by albert camus btw…cool post!

Thank you for your comment dear! How awesome that you packed up and started life anew in the Caribbean. You are so right – do what you love and live your life however you choose! Have a lovely week!

I was listening to an interview recently with Kanye West and he said he doesn’t like cubicles. He is known for being controversial and pushing the envelope, very much in the same way that Madonna does. One may not always approve, but I actually love that about the both of them…
