Decor Thoughts: French Style via “American Horror Story” in New Orleans

January 15, 2014

I’m definitely a little bit of a Francophile.

I mostly adore French accents in clothing, food or decor.

So of course I was smitten by the French touches on the set of “American Horror Story” set in New Orleans; think of sweeping chandeliers, gilded edges, and soft settees.  While I haven’t watched the show this season which sets Miss Robichaux’s Academy for Exceptional Young Ladies aka teen witches in a dreamy New Orleans mansion, I love the vibe of the set.  The architecture is sweeping, yet the color palette is stark – think of decor only in cool white and deep black.  Ellen Brill, the costume designer, equates the mood to a black and white vibe of an old noir film. It goes to show that grand architecture could be beautiful, but in a haunting way.

It’s very authentic. One of my childhood friends had this kind of furniture in her home. It was a blush pink though. Looked exactly like the couch and chairs pictures. Mansions in New Orleans have very high ceilings and definitely boast chandeliers and elaborate staircases. I love the simplicity of these rooms. Portraits on the walls is common. I haven’t seen this show! Will have to look for it. Do you know what channel? Wooden floors are also common in old New Orleans mansions. Great post!

I’ve never watched the show, but that looks like an amazing set.
I have a weakness for grand staircases like that. How would you ever decide which side you wanted to go up? It would be an issue every time.

Okay- so I don’t watch the show— but the set seems pretty amazing. At first glance the rooms feel slightly minimal, but then when you take in the artwork and the chandeliers their is an absolute grandeur….
