A friend is very different from an acquaintance. The former is tried and true; the latter only a shadow in one’s life.

Who do you consider your close friends?  How did you meet them?

I’ve been fortunate to make some great friends while I was at different stages of my life.  I have some truly wonderful friends from high school who knew me when we first started shopping at Express and first attempted to dress casually cool.  I also have a few good friends from graduate school where we bonded over driving through the French countryside and late night sessions gorging on brie and chamembert.

I’ve also met a fairly large number of acquaintances.  As an expat, I am part of a large transient community that meets many people who have all called a new place home.  Some people are passing friends that we have met through other friends or associations and we may occasionally share a laugh or good meal with them.  But I don’t have many deep friendships with all of these otherwise lovely people.  I am fortunate to have forged a few friendships here as well though.  I know that we are good friends because they have been patient with us when we shifted our focus away from wine laden dinners to home visits filled with worries about newborn eating habits.  While I’m bound to make even more acquaintances as I shift into a new community of moms, I am truly appreciative of my good friends (and glad to call a few of you good friends!)

On another note friends, I also wanted to let you know that I will be switching domains to Little Luxury List very soon (you can even see it now!)  I’ll slowly be adopting a new design and header as well.  Please update your bookmarks and I hope to see you there too!

Have a lovely week!

These are wonderful pictures!! My close friends live far away from me really, we’re all quite spread out, even in different countries. We keep in touch through post and email. My husband is my closet friend though, so it’s not so bad 🙂 I’ve made some amazing blog friends too, so everyone makes life a lot happier 🙂 Have a great week doll xx

My close friends are spread all over the world too! Thank goodness for email and messaging which make keeping in contact so much easier. My husband is a pretty awesome friend as are blog buddies 😉

It is so hard to forge relationships when everything feels temporary…. but it is exciting when you realize an acquaintance has transformed into a friend. Often I discover this shift when something stressful or challenging is happening….

    Congrats on the new site!

I love that quote! While I have many acquaintances, I have just a small circle of people I truly consider close friends.

It’s such a thoughtful question, and something I think of quite a bit. I think friendship is one of those things that evolves as we do, sometimes people no longer seem to fit and then things change and old friends come back into our lives, so welcome and familiar. Hope all is well well with you!

Mary Jo, this is so true! Sometimes we all just change in subtle but different ways. Friends may change but it is also nice to find a familiar but old friend too!

When you have a good friendship, it should be cherished. There were people in my life I thought were friends, that were not. It makes it harder now, because most of my friends are married w/children and I’m not. So I don’t really “fit” in their life. Which is ok with me. I wanted to get married and have children but it never happened. So I can’t force it. I have more people I associate with. Thanks for giving your new domain. I will update it.

You are so right – good friends should be cherished! I have made many more acquaintances than friends. We may all move into different phases with our lives. I really hope that having a family won’t cause me to lose friends because I have a different focus now.
