Decor Thoughts: Beloved Backyards

June 24, 2015

Do you have a backyard?

I live in an apartment now, but always lived in a home with a backyard when I was growing up.  We actually held a little party for my daughter in my parent’s backyard when we all visited New York a few weeks ago.  After a week of uncertain weather, the clouds parted to reveal blue skies, robust breezes, and a sunny day perfect for romping around in the backyard.  A small row of toddlers gleefully jumped from the patio to the grass.  I also laid out a few blankets so that the kids could sit on the ground while munching on their food.  It was quite an idyllic scene and reminded me of how much I miss having a backyard.

I looked up a few backyards for future inspiration and have determined that the perfect backyard encompasses:

  • a link to a garden with flowers as well as vegetables
  • ample seating (teak would be a classic option)
  • soft ambient lighting for the evening
  • a semi-enclosed room for the extremely warm days
  • natural canopy or shade
  • a pool for more active days
  • a grill and patio for summer parties

Here are a few favorite backyard spaces:

Our flat has a little balcony but I am totally daydreaming about a tiny little backyard:) Those above are stunning, sweetie.

I’ve always lived in the city so growing up I did envy my friends who had backyards. Now that I’m an adult I think I prefer my terrace to a backyard as it doesn’t require any work LOL ;p

I love terraces and patios as well Rowena and plan on writing about that next time 😉 I was blown away by this gorgeous Brooklyn Heights patio…hmm, maybe one day? Admittedly, I am also quite lazy as well and wouldn’t want to do a lot of work, especially with the lawn (which is why basic gardeners are popular in my parent’s neighborhood so they don’t have to deal with the grass!)

I love this post and my parents always had a big backyard (actually more like a field) and it was nowhere like the pics in your post, but there is something so nice about being able to eat dinner outside in backyard with pretty lighting and trees. How nice you still get it at your parents too when you visit and one day I definitely want to have a house with a back yard. :))

It’s nice going back to your parent’s backyard too right? I love the idea of al fresco dining as well. I’ll definitely have a backyard some day and you should stop by if you’re in the neighborhood (wherever in the world we will be!)

These are so dreamy! I love lights in a backyard. Mine is pretty plain. LOL I had beautiful landscaping, but Hurricane Katrina water killed everything and refuse to invest again. So I keep it cut and maintained.
