What is the most luxurious thing you own? I was thinking about this and am fortunate to have a few luxurious accessories and pieces of clothing. I was lucky enough to wear Pronovnas and Monique Lhuillier gowns for my wedding and have amassed a small collection of Hermès scarves.  But I’m not someone that goes out in head to toe designer gear. I’m also interested in what touches can pull my outfit together and started thinking of how I could infuse touches of luxury for less into my outfit; I whittled down and wanted to share 5 things that will make your outfit look more luxurious too.  Sometimes it’s about luxurious items that elevate your outfit, but it can also be about a detail like a great fit.  Either way, I want to concentrate on items that will make it for the long haul and make me like the best version of myself.

5 Things that will make your outfit look more luxurious

Fabulous Purse or shoes

I am a bona-fide purse girl (almost addict but I hold myself back).  I proudly love bags of all makes, but really fall for a luxury bag. I hunted down and then wrote this little guide on how to get an authentic vintage Chanel purse. Some day, I’ll also have a Kelly or two (in very specific materials and colors of course).  I always notice other women’s bags (even recently when I was at a seminar and noticed someone’s beautiful Proenza Schouler PS11).  Shoes are a close second to me.  While statement shoes are gorgeous (my Prada fairy shoes are still a favorite), I’ve been looking for a great pair of nude pumps forever (Christian Louboutin Sophia Regina pumps are on the list!)  I want fewer pairs of shoes and bags, but really awesome ones (hence the bag hiatus for the last few years!)

Fitted Clothing

The right fit is EVERYTHING.  It’s not about something being too tight or short, but skimming your body just right so it highlights the right parts.  We don’t all mold to off the rack clothing (maybe our waists or hips are a different size or it’s just a tad too long). But when a piece of clothing is fitted just right, the resulting is elegant and refined.  There is a reason why celebrities like Johannes Huebl, aka Olivia Palermo’s other half, even gets his swimsuits tailored (seriously!) I’ve found a few good tailors and a better fitted suit or dress has made such a difference.

Statement jewelry

I was never a jewelry fan growing up.  I suppose it’s because my mom never wore much jewelry.  I still don’t wear much jewelry, but am now really fascinated by bold pieces. Statement jewelry (my Lanvin for H&M red necklace is a favorite) really brightens up an otherwise simple outfit.  It doesn’t have to be large but can also be a pair of classic diamond studs (still on my wishlist!) or an interesting cuff.  Statement jewelry definitely makes your outfit more noticeable.

Matching Details

Matching or coordinating details instantly makes a look more cohesive.  It doesn’t have to be a matching top and bottom or cardigan set with shell (though those were a staple work wardrobe item for me in the early years).  Simply match a color or detail in one piece to another part of your outfit.  Perhaps you can carry a royal blue purse with a blue tipped sweater or a bold silver cuff with a blazer with silver details.  It’s all about subtle references in your outfit.

Beautiful Fabric

Even before I worked in fashion, I could instantly distinguish quality materials.  I was particularly aware of this when I was wedding dress shopping and became obsessed with alencon lace.   Cheaper materials often look cheap (or may wrinkle easily which drives me nuts).  Some materials simply can not be replicated affordably.  So a nice dress in a beautiful fabric may be more expensive, but will end up costing less than the multiple options you’ll buy along the way.  Look for natural materials when possible and ones with a good weight (we all know those thin cotton tees wear so quickly!)
