Who makes the best chocolate chip cookies? We all have our favorite bakeries and recipes for this classic cookies. But I had read about Levain Bakery chocolate chip walnut cookies time and time again. They have been highlighted by several local and national outlets are are supposed to be the best chocolate chip cookies in NYC. There are so many great bakeries in New York. What makes Levain Bakery and these particular cookies special?
I managed to convince friends that we ALL had to try Levain Bakery’s chocolate chip walnut cookies recently. We were already in Hell’s Kitchen so it was a straight shot uptown to the bakery. This was on a Friday afternoon about 3 pm. We were competing with the after school crowd, but I figured it wouldn’t be crowded otherwise. When I arrived, there was a short line outside the tiny bakery. While there were about 5 people ahead of me, the line moved quickly. I surveyed the other offerings on display from chocolate chunk cookies to scones and oatmeal raisin cookies. Ultimately, I just got a few of the still warm chocolate chip walnut cookies.
At $4 a piece and almost half a pound each, I only needed a few! This staff member agreed – “they’re huge!”
My family happily sampled the cookies. Everyone agreed it was an excellent cookie with a healthy amount of butter, balance of chocolate chips/crushed walnuts to batter, and crispness to softness. They are giant cookies and perfect for sharing (if there is any left over!) My husband likes these cookies, but says he still prefers my chocolate chip cookies. I didn’t even pay him to say that! He still likes a substantial cookies, but with a few more chocolate chips and of course sea salt. Either way, I can still say these are among the best chocolate chip cookies in New York. It’s a good thing Levain Bakery is expanding so even more people can eat these delicious cookies!

Yum – Cookies are one of my favourite things (cue Sound of Music soundtrack) and I was drooling over those cookie photos! I am heading to New York later on this year and that bakery is on the top of my list 🙂
