5 unexpected ways to use coconut oil

June 28, 2017

Coconut oil has quickly become one of the more popular oils lately.  You’ve probably eaten or applied it recently.  I’ll still sometimes run a little bit of coconut oil through my hair when I find that it is a little frizzy and want a sleeker look. I have also tried to incorporate coconut oil into a few dishes.  It is full of Medium Chain Triglycerides, which are a type of fat that are more easily digested by the body. It is also a more efficient form of energy. Coconut oil is also antifungal and antibacterial so I’ve used it for cleaning a few other things as well. But I also wanted to share a few unexpected ways to use coconut oil.

5 unexpected ways to use coconut oil

1. Substitute for butter

I do love butter.  But I try not to indulge in it too much for obvious reasons.  I have substituted coconut oil for butter in a few recipes, including my flourless chocolate cake. I also like to use coconut oil when cooking pancakes or just put in a spoonful for a tropical twist on oatmeal.

2. Mild cleanser for your beauty tools

I’ve used a quick swipe of coconut oil to clean out a few beauty tools in my cabinet.  I’ll dab a little coconut oil on a cotton swab and wipe out my eyelash curler or nail clippers.  We don’t often clean these tools, but really should!  I’ve noticed that my eyelash curler in particular gets a lot of gunk and mild rust towards the edges.  I certainly wouldn’t want that in eye yes!

3. Mild cleanser for your  brushes

I use coconut oil as part of a natural and easy way to clean my makeup brushes (see the tutorial here).    I like to use just a little bit both because of its antibacterial properties as well as mild moisturizing effects.

4. Dry scalp treatment

Got dandruff? Coconut oil can keep your scalp moisturized helping to prevent dandruff before it starts.  Coconut oil absorbs easily into skin, but remember that a little goes a long way!  I’ve used jut a touch of coconut oil on dry spots when I’ve had a dry scalp.

5. Makeup remover

I’ve used a touch of coconut oil to naturally remove my makeup.  It helps to dissolve caked on makeup gently. It won’t be as drying on your skin and actually helps to moisturize skin.  But remember that coconut oil can be slightly clog poring on some skin types so use sparingly!  I would suggest using it around your eyes as a light remover.

I love using coconut oil for hair care. And, of course, coconuts are delicious to eat. I didn’t know it was so useful for makeup products, too. That’s great!

I first learned about it a couple of years ago and was so surprised at its uses! You’ve added a little more to my list. Thanks.
