It’s unfair really – why do I still get breakouts when I’m in my thirties? Why does my skin look dull when I use all these fancy serums and creams? I knew one part of the reason is that I wear sunscreen or a BB cream daily and some of it wasn’t fully getting removed. After all my favorite serum foundation is supposed to stay put for a few hours. But it shouldn’t actually remain on my face all night. I started reading more about double cleansing, including from my blogger buddy Rowena. It was annoying to add another step to my skincare routine. But I could see the logic – cleaner skin is better skin. A cleaner face also enables my other products to work more effectively. So I’m a convert and wanted to share how double cleansing can save your skin.
How Double-Cleansing could save your skin
Why is Double-Cleansing necessary?
Double-cleansing is a great way to ensure that you really remove the dirt and oil on your face. Dirt and dead skin can build up. This build up effects the strength of the other products you use. So your your lovely creams and other products aren’t as effective as they could be. As a result, your skin could end up looking more dull. I’ve certainly been guilty of this and found that an extra cleaning step really brightened up my skin. In addition, I’ve lived in this tropical climate for a few years, but have found that I’ve gotten fewer breakouts since I’ve started double-cleansing.
Fun fact: According to Alicia Yoon, founder of Peach & Lily, women in Japan, Korea, and possibly China have been double cleansing since about the 14th century! They would use oil based cleansers were used to remove makeup and then rice based powder was applied to flush our impurities.
How do you Double-Cleanse?
- Use an oil based cleanser (this is my favorite now and you can get it at Target!) and gently apply all over the face.
- Remove the oil cleanser with a warm cloth (I’ll sometimes use a few cotton pads with warm water). Use circular motions to remove dirt particularly in your T-zone and around your nose. Rinse out your clothe between uses.
- For normal to oil skin, use a foam or gel based cleanser next. If you have dry to sensitive skin, use a mild emulsion. Rub into skin.
- Thoroughly wash away cleanser and let your skin dry.
