Travel Log: Escaping to the past in Qibao, Shanghai

July 25, 2012
I am a city girl, through and through.

But sometimes I like to escape from the usual concrete jungle and step into a different environment.  I visited Qibao aka Seven Treasures in Shanghai and got to see a bit of what an ancient town would have looked like.  The town itself was established around the 900s, but the main temple and streets were rebuilt only 10 years ago; only a large bell from the Ming Dynasty survives.  The town streets were super crowded so be warned if you visit during the weekend!  But it is an interesting change of pace from the usual Shanghai scene and the small pockets with fewer tourists are nice.

Quail eggs inside a salt dome!  What a snack!

This was a beautiful poem and plea written by someone on the street.  I hope he gets what he is seeking!

    Hmm…

I keep going back and forth on the issue of mainland China. I don’t like the idea of supporting a regime with my tourism dollars which censors the internet, jails political dissidents, and allows economic exploitation.

That being said, I hope one day I will be able to visit Beijing, Shanghai, the Great Wall, etc… I definitely enjoyed my time in Taiwan…

I love the photo of the bridge. That poem on the street, although I can’t read it, seems like a cool gesture.

You are absolutely correct, China cannot be ignored by any one in APAC, including my own Japan. And given the history between the two countries, dialogue is difficult, which affects trade and the exportation of more liberal values from Japan to China, since anything Japanese is met with at least initial suspicion because of prior acts of Japanese ultranationalism and more recent insensitive decisions by our politicians.

I absolutely love this place. Perfect for escaping Shanghai’s craziness.
