What city do you consider the city of your adulthood?
I lived in New York almost my entire life, including my early adulthood. It was the city where I learned independence and started taking the train by myself to high school. It is also the city where I held my first few jobs after college and discovered new cuisines, new loves, and developed my own style (wonderful samples sales of course helped).
But when I got married, we moved around to Europe and then to Asia though I still visit New York fairly often. The cities we lived in during the last few years are the cities where we both had different beginnings. We began a new life together with new jobs, new industries, and new friends as well. It has been really interesting starting life here again and going through so many milestones here. I saw these pictures from the Harper’s Bazaar photo shoot and thought about my former life in New York and the type of life I may create in the next phase of my life. It should be exciting!

I love New York, it’s an amazing place. I’m from a very small place in America…everything is a little behind in the times but people are ok. New York was the first really big place I had ever been to, it was amazing. It made me realize there was such a big world out there that I had never seen. Now I live in the UK and go around Europe, I see lots of things I had never seen before. But, it would be nice to go back to New York once more 🙂 xx
I think Los Angeles was the city of my adulthood. I moved there just after turning 21 and graduating college. In total I spent 8 years there and it was really a major developmental period of my life. Since then about a year in Chicago and now I am approaching a year in Singapore. I am not sure what will be next, but like you, I am enjoying the adventure of it.

i learned how to be independant in hawaii.. pay my own bills. take public transportation. where i developed my foodie palette. i have so many fond memories of hawaii. i miss it and constantly want to go back and start a new chapter lol!! it’s funny our experiences are so similar but in two entirely different places :p

Ohhh that all white outfit has gotten me so inspired! I love her hairstyle, I feel like cutting mine off after seeing this. I have only lived in the city after school, and although I can manage it, I prefer smaller quieter places. But NYC must have been an experience of a lifetime

That was a beautiful story. It’s really cool that you took the train to school as a kid. It seems even cooler to me because there wasn’t really any public transportation where I grew up–everyone just drove. I think it’s wonderful that you’re living it up across the globe. And that Vonnegut quote is lovely and appropriate.
Aww thanks Cheryl. It is interesting to think back on childhood and how our experiences are so shaped by where we live! We are enjoying our time across the globe – we’ll see what the next few years bring though!

I sometimes wonder if we truly have the capacity to change our locations and change ourselves. If I moved to a new city, could I be someone else, or would I just be me in a different zipcode?
Being in a family, with an extended family who has always remained geographically close, it’s hard to imagine taking off and trying out life in a different part of the world, though I suppose home will always be home and a place you can return to.
Such a beautiful spread. I came of age as a young adult in nyc, but I consider the city of my adulthood to be LA because it’s where I really grew up as a person, started my own business etc. Interesting the images of fashion that come to mind as I think about this: Trina Turk, Corey Lynn Calter, and other so cal designers.
