Five ways to get ready for spring

How are you getting ready for spring?

I’m sure many of you, especially my American friends in the Northeast and Midwest are SO ready for spring. I feel for you.  I’ve been through brutal winters not only in NYC, but Central New York too.  Seriously snow in April is beyond ridiculous.  Luckily, spring is here.  While it may not feel like spring in terms of the temperature, you can sure make it feel like spring in other ways.

Here are my tips for bringing on spring:

1. Wrap up winter throughout your home and make plans for spring

Of course it will feel like winter if your home is still in winter mode.  Are your flannel pajamas and sheets still out? Put them away!  Okay, if it’s still cold, don’t freeze of course, but at least switch to a set of sheets that are a little lighter or brighter.  Throw open the shades a little more to let in the light.  Put yourself in a spring frame of mind by starting with your home.

It’s also a great time to make plans for the warmer weather.  It is a great time to take a road trip to see some friends.  Or perhaps you can go a little further and plan a trip somewhere abroad.  I snapped this photo of a bicycle on the cobblestoned streets of Milan in May.  The weather was a still brisk but I just adored walking through the streets in a few light layers.  Ok now I want to go back to Milan…

2. Buy fresh flowers

I recently started buying fresh flowers.  I first bought roses because I was captivated by the charming, bold shade of pink I spied in the display vases.  But then I bought a bunch of red daisies and the week after that I had to have some pure white lilies.  It’s really cool how this burst of beautiful nature instantly elevates our space and my mood.  Can someone near me please sell peonies?

3. Spring clean

Has your stuff just taken over your home in the last few months?  I know I’ve accumulated too much stuff in the last year (blame the baby!)  But I’ve tried to tame the clutter by doing a few mini purges in the last month.  My niece has gotten a few more cute pieces of clothing from my ever growing little lady and I started to put together bags of things to post on Craigslist.  I am casting a nasty side eye at my closet as well as I spy a lovely dress with a broken zipper and a few old pairs of my husband’s shorts.  It’s definitely time to start another donate/sell pile!

4. Step outside

I’m often guilty of staying cooped inside all day.  It is easy enough to simply stay inside, head down, and stare at your computer/do your work.  But it’s remarkable what a simple stroll outside can do.  You get a healthy dose of vitamin D of course.  But your senses all get hit with the shift in the seasons.  You may get a glimpse at some flower blooming, smell some freshly mowed grass, and feel a sharp breeze brush past your cheek.  I’m making it a point to get out every afternoon now and just enjoy being outside.

5. Revive your look

Finally, spring is a great time to bring out a different section of your wardrobe.  Hello florals and pastels!  Hey, calling all prints, come on out!  Winter dressing is a bit limited, but there are so many great possibilities with a closet ready for spring.  I love layering a brightly colored blazer over a simple shirt and slim pants.  I also bring out the clutches and floral bags.  I saw these bags at Kate Spade and had to giggle.  Could any purses define spring better than these quirky beauties?

I’m SO READY for spring! I love fresh flowers too, if I don’t have to take care of it. Haha. I’d buy flowers and put it in every single room. They’re so beautiful!
