“Christmas cookies can’t help but be retro – they are memory first, sugar-flour-egg-redhot-gumdrop-sparkle reality second.”

This editorial of Crystal Renn for Vogue Portugal September 2018 struck me right away – it had such a familiar and retro air. I can easily imagine this having been shot in the ‘70s or ‘80s. There is an air of a forgotten time, yet also an air of  timelessness as well.

I’ve been in NYC for a few weeks so I had similar feelings. Of course it’s quite different being here with the kids. They’re experiencing the unfamiliar chills of winter air and marveling at the different sites and sounds. We’ve taken them to museums in 3 boroughs! When I visited them, I also felt like I had stepped back in time. Suddenly I was 8 years old and marveling at the huge bubbles at the Hall of Science. I was also once again awestruck at the huge dinosaurs towering overhead at the Museum of Natural History (I’ve once again learned about different types like sauropods!) These places have barely changed though of course I’ve changed. But I liked seeing my little ones interact and play in the same places that I played as a child.

Apologizes for the radio silence but I’ve had a busy time handling the kids and seeing a few old friends too. I’ve had a lot of mixed feelings seeing New York after so long. I can see fragile family relationships, failing health, and the stress of tough jobs take its toll. But I’ve also witnessed the laughter of many mini family members and the pure affection between cousins close in age (between their tiny catfights lol).  I hope that the affection and love remain timeless. Family isn’t always perfect but it is familiar and can be wonderful as well.

Have a lovely week!

This editorial is total retro vibes. The lighting and composition has a cinematic feel as well. Who is the p[hotographer? The work feels somewhat familiar yet I can’t quite place it. Hope you and the kids are staying warm. It ahsn’t been all that cold and then this week it’s like deep freeze.

The photographer is Branislav Simoncik. I wasn’t familiar with his work, but love the vibe of this editorial! It’s a bit cinematic and surreal right?

Welcome back and sounds like you had an interesting family visit. I will be heading back end of this year and I hope I’ll have a lovely time. My relationship with my family has always been up and down.

How wonderful and weird it must have been for you to return after so much time. I haven’t been back in nearly seven years now and I yearn to return. One thing is that I am worried all the amazing family who opened their hearts and doors for me, may not feel the same way after such a long absence.
