FFF – Valentine’s Day experiences, not gifts

February 14, 2020

Happy Fun, Free, Friday lovelies!

Do you celebrate Valentine’s Day? To tell you the truth, I’ve only really celebrated it a few times (though the new Galentine’s take on it seems really fun!) I also am not a fun of being forced to choose overpriced set menus once this Hallmark holiday rolls around. Anyway these days, most people are pretty on board with going beyond traditional gifts and creating experiences. I’ve certainly tapered down my own spending on physical items in the last few years but still travel quite a bit, with the family in tow. I’m also notoriously hard to shop for, so I definitely prefer an experience and will choose my own gift! Here are some ideas for Valentine’s Day experiences, not gifts.

Take a class

While we all have our own hobbies, I enjoy having shared activities with my partner too. My husband and I took salsa class together when we first started dating. He’s actually a better dancer than I am! But it was nice learning the steps together and having this shared experience. Now we take Muay Thai together. We’d definitely be in class today if our little one didn’t have a class in the early evening! I would also love to take a class where we can create something; I’ve seen cool ones like making your own cutting board (I have a thing for trays and boards!)

Cook together

I’m definitely the cook in this family. I didn’t cook much growing up, but certainly learned and became more comfortable with it. So it’s fun for me when I can take more of a back seat to cooking. My husband and I have cooked together a few times for our anniversary or Valentine’s Day. It has been nice to think of the menu and prepare it together. Surf ‘n turf is a popular menu item as is fried fish, creamed spinach, or anything that isn’t too complicated! It’s also a treat when my husband cooks and cleans for a special occasion. Who doesn’t like to be pampered now and then right?

This gluten free, sugar free carrot cake is definitely a treat!

Take a trip somewhere

I never really need an excuse to travel. But wouldn’t it be the most romantic thing to be in a completely different city or country during Valentine’s Day? You can explore this new place together and immerse yourself in an environment and culture free of conversation hearts. Eat local foods, wander through the streets or countryside, and unplug from everything, but each other. Ok now I’d love to go on a trip!

I can’t wait to get back to the Maldives!

Otherwise, this weekend I am…

…still trying to freak out and carry on despite the number of Novel Coronavirus cases doubling since last week. Most of my little one’s activities have been cancelled and schools are extra cautious. We cancelled our Taiwan trip since the toll there rose. I was lucky to get a sympathetic airline employee who allowed us to refund our trip. On the other hand, we are finalizing our trip to the Maldives. There have been no cases there and I want to seize an opportunity to escape. We were very close to cancelling this trip as well, but will of course be careful while traveling. I also don’t want to be completely paralyzed by this situation if we’re going somewhere that should be safe.

What are you up to this weekend?

Have a lovely weekend!

Valentine’s Day is meaningless to my husband and I and we feel no need to celebrate. He manages to make me feel special on most days and I hope I do the same for him.

I hope you had a lovely valentine’s day, these are nice ways ot celebrate it! We don’t really do much for the occasion here, it’s more an American thing 🙂

Hope you do get to go on your trip and unwind a little – we haven’t noticed anything too bad with the virus here – our family is in malaysia rather than china so we are quite insulated from it all. terrible seeing so many deaths from it though!

    Hope you’re having a great weekend 🙂

Experiences sound awesome to me! Me and my SO ended up sanitizing our bed and put on a new bed skirt together and joked this was a meaningful Valentine’s day activity. We actually managed to eat at a good restaurant like any other day without having to make a reservation and I liked that, too. ;D

Sorry about the canceled trip. But soon the Maldives!! Stay well and have a great weekend!
