How to create more “me time”

April 24, 2019

How do we create more time for ourselves in our increasingly hectic lives? I glance at my children and love their carefree perspectives. Sure they do have activities, but they don’t have to worry about much else besides showing up somewhere! They live in the moment and are constantly trying to have fun.

But what about the rest of us?

We have to deal with balancing budgets and treating ourselves, while still saving.

Everyday is a juggling act amongst our various priorities.

We are constantly dealing with putting out fires big and small at work and at home.

I don’t know about you, but I’m spent at the end of most days. I am lucky to get do some reading or sometimes just try out a new TV show (luckily I’m getting into a few great books again). Sometimes I barely have time to do anything. So where does that leave us? How do we get more “me time”? How do we find time to do the things that matter?

How to create more “me time”

1.Schedule the time

Date nights (or day dates!) are a wonderful way to spend time with your significant other. But have you scheduled time for yourself? We are busy running errands, running our households, and working in so many different ways. Sometimes, that leaves us little time for ourselves. There were times I was so busy with meetings at work, I hardly had time to do the work itself! But I started allotting time for myself so I wouldn’t have other meetings at the time. I also realized I was spending too much time on things like checking email and social media. When I scaled back time on certain activities, I freed up valuable time. I need to remind myself to do this more often!

2. Prioritize it

We all have a never-ending to-do lists. They may temporarily clear only to be filled with new tasks. But we place priorities on what we do right? We should similarly prioritize time for ourself. Prioritize it – whether you want to read a book, work out, or just have some alone time. If it’s important for you to have me time, put it at the top of your list.

3. Ask for the time

Are you feeling overwhelmed and overworked? Sometimes it seems like there’s not enough time to do everything. Can someone else help with your tasks? Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Others that are capable of helping you may not even be aware you need help unless you ask. Ask your partner and your family and friends for help once in a while. Pay the favor back if you need it. Sometimes it takes a village to just get through a Monday.

Take the time for yourself. Schedule it. Prioritize it. Ask for it. You deserve it, as do we all.
