Ilya Vermeulen for Harper’s Bazaar Germany April 2019

“Believe that the world is an ethereal flower, and ye live.”

Jack Kerouac

What do you hope to accomplish in your life? I saw this beautiful and haunting editorial of Ilya Vermeulen for Harper’s Bazaar Germany April 2019 and thought of our ethereal lives. It’s not just about the places we want to visit, but what we want to accomplish and how we hope to leave our mark on the world. Realistically, not many of us will be the next Oprah or Ben Franklin or Marie Curie. But we can still experience and impact the world in our own ways. So when I start to think about this crazy world, I think about two things: how I want to see more of it and how I can help it.

Although I didn’t grow up traveling a ton, I have really come to love and appreciate it. I’m grateful my parents put me on my first trip to Europe with a high school class. While the trip was a whirlwind, we got to see and experience so much in that one week tour. I adore eating different cuisines, experiencing different cultures, and seeing natural beauties with my own eyes. We’ve brought the kids on all our trips (painful as it can be) and I really relished seeing their smiles at tasting their first authentic banh xeo or feeling the grass of a lush French forest beneath their feet. I want to continue exploring the world with them although some places are becoming more limited. Places like Komodo Island and formerly Boracay have been closed due to over tourism. See more of the world while it’s still there!

At the same time, I’m becoming more acutely aware of how ethereal the world itself is now. There’s no doubt that man and all its advances and tastes have taken a toll on the world. I’m making small steps towards becoming more sustainable – I’m not buying any more plastic straws and try to minimize plastic whenever I can. I also even use cloth diapers more than half the time (to my husband’s dismay). While I know I still have a way to go, I hope that I can minimize waste and also instill a few good habits in my kids. We only have so much time in this world so we may as well see it and protect it.

Have a lovely week!

Gorgeous message. We may not all become Oprah’s but we can still have major impacts on those around us. The world isn’t looking so great these days, the Dotard, plastic pollution, it’s disheartening to see our world crumbling like this

I really like how this editorial has both a slightly dreamy surreal and painterly feeling at the same time. I’d like to think that if we all do our small part in terms of living as sustainably as possible , it can somehow make a difference in preserving the world.

Re: Your question to me about masks – are you asking about sheet masks or other types?

Yes I’m asking about both types of masks although I am most clueless about sheet masks. I like the Herbivore brightening mask and Kiehl’s mask for non sheet type masks! I tried a few Naruko and some Korean brands which seemed fine, but am looking for other ones.
