FFF – Black books and designers to check out

June 19, 2020

Happy Fun, Free, Friday lovelies!

I may be half a world, away, but still see and feel the frustration, anger, and disappointment of my black American friends. I’ve experienced my share of racism, but never to the degree that black men and women do. The recent list of reported atrocities are truly heartbreaking. Many changes are needed to make the structural changes needed to truly create a more equitable future. We can start with an easy, but important part by highlighting and buying from black designers whose products we truly enjoy. Being a small designer is already hard, but economic empowerment is the first step to encouraging more talented black designers to launch. I am so happy to learn about these black jewelry designers and it’s hard to pick a favorite.

The Almasika earrings are totally my vibe though – elegant, luxurious, and gorgeous. This is a great list of black fashion designersPrayers and Plans is on my list.

I’m also grateful for well reviewed books and this list of books by black authors is no exception. I just got “Sing, Unburied, Sing”. Borrow it from your local library if you can’t buy it. If you can’t donate, you can still stream to donate by listening to this playlist (I’m doing it now and loving it!) This is just the beginning, but changes in our perceptions, knowledge gained from buried stories, and shifts in our behavior pave the way for a better future.

Otherwise, this weekend I am…

…monitoring the current state of things. Singapore will be going into the next phases of exit from the soft lockdown or “circuit breaker”. Timeframes are of course fuzzy though since they are dependent on the number of cases that may arise. But there is hope and we may yet progress to limited socialization in a few weeks! I am thankful to have discovered new-to-me retailers, like speciality meat and cheese providers and an array of seafood suppliers too. I’m not whipping up anything extraordinary, but cooked my first razor clams and may try out lobster too (check out my IG stories!)

Have a lovely weekend!

They are beautiful earrings and I definitely need to support more black owned businesses! thank you for sharing! 🙂 Some of the books I ordered for the kids arrived – they came in a few different orders as they were sold out and on back order, which is good to see! But I haven’t seen one of the ones I ordered arrive yet – it was one my black boss recommended I read but really hard to track down online, The New Jim Crow. He thinks it’s a good one to start with and once I read that I’m sure I’ll find more.

Hope that you are having a lovely weekend 🙂
